Our
country is well known for its generosity and support for victims
of calamity abroad. In the same spirit JIMAS called upon the
wider community to come forward to assist the many flood victims
here at home in the UK. We
organized a sponsored fast to coincide with a day during the
month of Ramadan 2007. We pledge to donate £10.00 for every
non-Muslim who was able to fast a day with us in any form
or manner, e.g., for half a day, drinking only but not taking
any solids, or even to give up swearing, or becoming angry
or smoking for a day.
Proceeds
paid via South Yorkshire Flood Disaster Relief Fund (www.sycf.org.uk)
South
Yorkshire Community Foundation (SYCF) is a registered charity
(number 517714) which enjoys full support of the four local
authorities of South Yorkshire. SYCF has given JIMAS permission
to collect funds on their behalf and return them to the Community
Foundation.
Around
30 non-Muslims fasted on that day and raised £628.60
by themselves and the Muslims contributed a further £1000
making a grand total of £1628.60.
Cheryl
Polley and Leonora Claxton scored the highest in answering
the questionnare and each won a dinner for two at the Loch
Fyne restaurant (previously Mortimers) in Ipswich from JIMAS.
Councillor
Jane Chambers and Ms. Smith had raised the highest amounts
from the non-Muslims.
