The
University of Essex, since its inception 40 years ago,
has been a multi faith, multi cultural institution. To
celebrate this and the diversity of those who live, work
and study at Essex, a multi-faith event was held at the
Wivenhoe Park campus to promote religious knowledge, understanding
and respect. Abu Muntasir of JIMAS was the Islamic representative
on the discussion panel. |

Keynote
address: 'Religious understanding in a modern university:
an exploration of the different faiths at the University
of Essex' by Professor Paul Weller, Head of Inter-Religious
Relations at the University of Derby, and Project Director
of the Home Office commissioned project (1999-2001)
on Religious Discrimination in England and Wales.

event was also attended by Dr David Capey, Treasurer,
Multi-Faith Chaplaincy Centre Mrs Cynthia Capey, Faiths
Officer, East of England Faiths Agency amongst others.

| The
programme consisted of a Buffet dinner at 5.30 p.m., stalls
from each faith group, an information forum with representatives
from the Buddhist, Christian, Jewish and Muslim faiths
on campus, an introduction by Professor Rob Massara at
8.00 p.m. followed by the Keynote address by Professor
Weller and lastly a Panel discussion and questions from
the floor. |
