Orford Castle from a distance

Steeped in history, this attractive small town is overlooked by its 12th century castle keep built by Henry VII for coastal defence. From the top, there are panoramic views over the town and marshes. Brick and timber buildings line the streets to the little quayside, where there are boat trips to the mysterious Orfordness (a shingle spit). The town is noted for its oysters.

JIMAS was delighted for the opportunity to discuss "Islam, present and future" with the non-Muslim community at the Orford Town Hall on the 10th of April 2006 facilitated by SIFRE. Amongst questions that were discussed:

1. Do moderate muslims object to symbols/traditions associated with Christmas such as Christmas trees and coloured lights? If so, why?
2. Why was the Afghan who converted from Islam to Christianity condemned to death? Why are people not allowed to choose their religion?
3. Some Middle Eastern Islamic leaders have warned that Islam is coming to the West including Britain. What does this mean and is there to be an integration of Islam into British Society or a separation of Islamic and secular life styles with a risk of security problems?
4 . Islam seems to embrace a male dominated life which arguably the rest of Britain does not. What is the role of women in a segregated Islamic view of society in Britain? Can  segregation of the sexes be a proper part of modern Britain where equal opportunities and sexual equality are enshrined in statute law?
